Arabic Pronunciation for Quran: Fix These 10 Common Mistakes
One small slip of the tongue can change “Heart” (Qalb) to “Dog” (Kalb). Discover the 10 most critical pronunciation errors non-Arabic speakers make and how to fix them.
The Difference Between “Pain” and “Elephants”
In Surah Al-Fil, the word “Al-Fil” means “The Elephant”. If you pronounce it with a heavy ‘P’ sound (which doesn’t exist in Arabic) or mess up the vowel, you might inadvertently say something else.
Arabic is sensitive. A slight shift in Makharij (exit points of letters) changes the meaning of Allah’s words. Here are the 10 most common traps to avoid.
10 Errors to Avoid
Qaf is deep in the throat; Kaf is shallow. Mixing them changes “Qalb” (Heart) to “Kalb” (Dog).
Fix: Raise the back of your tongue for Qaf.The ‘Ha’ in “Al-Hamd” is sharp and comes from the middle throat. The ‘Ha’ in “Huwa” is soft and from the chest.
Fix: Tighten your throat slightly for (ح).Often pronounced as a simple ‘A’ or Hamza (ء). ‘Ayn comes from the middle of the throat and has a squeezing sound.
Fix: Practice saying “Aa’a” while squeezing the throat.Unique to Arabic. Often wrongly pronounced as ‘Zaa’ (ظ) or a plain ‘D’. It requires the side of the tongue to press against the upper molars.
Sad is heavy and full-mouth; Seen is sharp and smiley. Mixing them changes meaning drastically.
Fix: Round your mouth inside for Sad.The Shaddah doubles a letter. Ignoring it is like removing a letter from the Quran.
Example: “Iyyaka” (We worship) vs “Iyaka” (Sunlight). Some students bounce the ‘L’ or ‘M’ when stopping. Only 5 letters bounce (Qutb Jad).
Rushing through long vowels (Alif, Waw, Yaa). They must be held for at least 2 counts.
Not holding the nasal sound on Noon and Meem Shaddah. It kills the rhythm of the recitation.
Stopping in the middle of a word or sentence that changes the meaning because you ran out of breath.
